Well many times there is a need when we have to control our domain name servers and when we browse into the DNS manager we see these intimidating terms that we possible can't understand. Here is my way to explain those Record Types What is an A Record An A type is a host records that translates your domain name to your IP (Internet protocol) Address. This record is important one because this is what your users will enter into their web browsers to get access to your website. Off course there is another option to enter your website's IP address directly into the browser but that guarantees that you will not get many users coming to your website. e.g. jaspreetchahal.org is Host Name in my A record type and its pointing to 118.139.169.x which is dedicated IP of this website What is a CNAME Record A CNAME is a record type that defines Aliases to your domain name. You can create many CNAME records. Mostly they are also know as sub-domains. The most common CNAME records for your domains are www, pop, imap, webmail and ftp. with correct CNAME set I can browse to my internet email using pop.jaspreetchahal.org and even www.jaspreetchahal.org will work. What is a MX Record MX stands for Mail Exchanger. You got it if you have to use a public mail server for your organization your will definitely need MX to be configured else there is no way that e.g. mail.jaspreetchahal.org could find my mail server. Mail server is a server that sends and receive emails on the Internet. You can set multiple MX with different priority value.
